The Bryston ST Series amplifiers incorporate the use of an innovative gain stage topology which yields a substantially lower noise floor through the use of low-impedance pathways within the amplifier. This same approach also has strong advantages in reducing the overall distortion performance. Bryston’s computer controlled distortion analyzers confirm Inter-modulation Distortion levels less than 10 parts per million (below 0.0009%) are typical for this new circuitry. All ST amplifiers use Bryston’s proprietary Quad-Complementary output section, which improves linearity to a new standard of accuracy, while virtually eliminating aggressive higher harmonic distortion products. From input to output, all the circuitry in the ST series of amps has been optimized for the most accurate performance possible. Custom dual torodial power supplies provide precise and focused soundstaging. The dual power supplies employ multiple filter capacitors per channel, rather than single pairs of larger filter cans. This allows improved high frequency response and reduces overall losses in the supply. Standard features included both balanced and unbalanced gold plated inputs, a ground lift switch to reduce those annoying ground loops and a stereo/mono switch for bridging the outputs if higher power levels are required.

The Bryston 4B is something of a legend among audio amplifiers. As our most popular amplifier over the years, it has attained inter-national status as an amplifier suitable for the finest and most sophisticated sound systems. Whatever the venue, be it a recording studio, a sound stage, a broadcast facility, a home theater installation, or a state-of-the-art stereo system, Bryston has continued to be the number one choice.

Description :

The Bryston 4B-ST is a quite handsome little devil in its own modest way. The 4B-ST is not a room-filling monster by any means. Sporting nicely beveled handles and two 45-degree chamfers running the width of the amp, the 4B-ST has nice business-like cosmetics that shouldn’t intrude on any décor. The front panel consists of a power switch with two green LEDs above it, nestled in the top groove. These LEDs are said to be three-color units to warn of clipping or its onset. I use "said" because never in use could I get them to turn orange (onset of clipping) or red (clipping).

Rated at 250Wpc (8 ohms) and up to 800 watts bridged (also 8 ohms), the 4B-ST never seemed to run out of steam even at some raise-the-roof levels. Further, specs imply good engineering and a stiff power supply. Distortion is at less than .007% from 20Hz to 20kHz, with a slew rate greater than 60 volts per microsecond. (120 volts per microsecond bridged). Coupled with a damping factor of over 500 (at 20Hz, reference 8 ohms), this is a good recipe for woofer control.

Other features include a stereo/mono switch, gold-plated input/output connectors, and switchable balanced XLR and RCA single-ended inputs. One nice feature I would like to see more of is the ground-lift switch. This lifts the internal circuitry while still grounding the chassis. As I noticed a slight ground-loop hum upon hook up, a flick of this switch resulted in a dead-quiet background. The sound quality at all listening levels is clean, tight bass (especially noticeable in piano recordings) coupled with a bright high end that had nary a trace of frizziness. This is definitely a golden-ear amplifier at a silver-ear price.

The Bottom Line: Durable designed and built to last for 20 years or longer..coincidently as long as their warranty!

When my first receiver went on the blink (A Pioneer), I had to decide whether or not to go that route again, or go separate components.. AMP PRE-AMP configuration.

I also own an Arcam Alpha 7 integrated amp, but this was not enough power for my KEF loudspeakers. I needed something in the 150 Watt's per channel range, or more. Unfortunately this is hard to find in any integrated design.

So now I went on the hunt for a solid dependable performer. I considered many choices, some of them being Mark Levinson, Threshold, Classe Audio(Canadian), just to name a few. The biggest drawback for these choices, was their high price. I mean in retrospect they were two to three times as much as the Bryston! The Classe Audio was less. I researched Bryston and was actually lucky enough to go visit their assembly facility, which used to be in my home town but has since moved. What I saw impressed me very much! Basically this amp is handmade!! Not put together on an assembly line, but put together painstakingly by hand. They were testing the amp at every stage of it's design, only components of the highest grade were being used. NO junk used in these babies! Epoxy circuit boards, torodial transformers(one each for the left and right channel) After seeing all this professionalism, I was ready to buy!

Well I was not disappointed, the sound is nothing short of remarkable! When you have 250 Watt's per channel and a high current delivery design, you cant go wrong! Every sort of music sounded perfectly reproduced. Lows are thunderous and powerful, highs are sweet and clear. This amp just gives you that feeling of being completely in control of music! Your not worried about running out of steam no matter what source of music you put on. I personally leave the amp on day and night, the Bryston representative told me, that is a good idea. His reasoning was this, amps sound better when warm. No true audiofile will dispute this. The power consumption would be like burning a 100 watt light bulb. Not too bad. Another good reason, every time you turn that amp on, it draws power like you wouldn't believe! If the location where you plug in your amp, is shared with other appliances around the house, your going to be tripping circuits left and right. Trust me on this! I've had to make trips out to the garage many times when I turned it back on for some reason or another.

Highly recommended, even as used items.

The Bottom Line: The Bryston power amps can serve as the rock solid foundations for a very high quality music/HT system.

In this particular case, the fact that Bryston offers a transferable 20-year warranty is a good summary indication of the level of reliability and build quality that you are getting with Bryston electronics. In my case, I am using a combo 3B (back channels) and 5B (front/center channels) to power a basic 5.0 HT system. The preamp is a used B&K Ref 30, which provides the high quality input needed to feed the high quality output from the Brystons.

Yes, the transferable warranty goes with the equipment, even if you buy/sell used units. I doubt that I will have a problem. The Brystons run faintly warm, off of a UP source that pools regular house electrical power, cleans it up on frequency and voltage variations, and feeds the system.

At the front end is the new Pioneer universal format player, the DV-563a, along with the Perpetual Technologies DAC units.

The point I am making is that getting the Brystons forced me to think through the levels of the rest of the system, so that I would have something like a good match among all quality components. The Brystons are feeding five channels, with Definitive Technologies full range speakers on all five channels. Thus, I feel no need for a subwoofer, although I suppose movie explosions would be even more forceful if I had a subwoofer in the system.

As it stands, I can achieve audio bliss without having much more, and the Brystons are the powerful guts of the system. Frequencies are clear and accurate, across the spectrum. The noise floor on these power amps is so low, you don't even think about it, until you realize you have to look at the lighted indicators to make sure the system is turned on.

Even when challenged with the wider dynamic ranges possible via Super Audio CD, and DVD-audio; well the Brystons don't even really break a sweat. It is not just that the power is there, but that it is also such clean power across the frequency spectrum. Like good friends who listen more than they talk, the Brystons just disappear in favor of the music, or the movie at hand. I play lots of classical, both vocal and instrumental. Chamber music is finally so vivid that I am rediscovering why people listen to it.

My latest demo disc has been the DVD-audio (not the CD version) of the Mahler Sym 8 with Chailly and associated artists. While I don't really care for Chailly, I have to admit that this recording puts all five channels to spectacular use, both a musical and a sonic blockbuster. The Bryston power amps handle the challenge with aplomb, grace, and complete calm. I actually hardly even really turn things up, since I live in an apartment and have to concern myself with what the neighbors think. Nevertheless, you can depend on the Bryston power amps to deliver, cleanly and consistently and musically.

I currently own a Bryston 4B, probably 4-5 years old. I have also owned a Bryston 3B in the past as well.

The Bryston 4B is a brute, big, heavy, built to last.

It provides all the power that I have ever needed, running a variety of speakers ranging from Bose 301's (4 of them), to Bose 801's (4 of them) to industrial grade Cerwin Vegas with 18" base drivers (these were designed for rock bands, with their own handles etc).

The 4B has output level controls for each channel, so you can run low power speakers without blowing them up. It also has banana plug outputs for easy hookup and moving. Just make sure that you plug the power connector directly into a proper grounded outlet, don't use a cheesy extension cord. There is a 20 year transferable warrantee, but I have never had a problem, so I cannot rate the warrantee service.

One slight downfall is that the 4B only comes in a 19" rack mount format (unless things have changed). For me this is not a problem since my stereo sits in a rack anyway.

The Bryston is not the cheapest Amp on the market, and it does not have all the bells, whistles and lights that some of the other amps have. However, it does provide dependable clean power year after year.

There is a reason Bryston has a great following - high-end sound without the high-end headaches or stratospheric prices. Strongly recommend.

Fantastic amp and fantastic company!

Paired with the right speakers (in my case Magnepan's 3.6s) it becomes beautifully transparent.

One listen and you'll understand why Bryston is usually only criticized when compared to amps costing far more (Krell and the like).

I have had my 4B for over 10 years and still love it. It has terrific bottom end that can fully scoop up the low notes, and fairly warm mids and highs.

I'll agree there are amps available with slightly less grainy mids but Bryston is far better than most.

My Bryston's amp and pre-amp's only failure over the last decade was a power switch, which they gladly fixed (and rechecked the entire amp while they had it). Great service. I wish more companies in the high-end market could provide the same great service as Bryston.
